About Under Secretary of War for Research & Engineering
The Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering (OUSW(R&E)) serves as the Department of War's (DoW) technology hub, ensuring the US military's technological superiority.
The primary mission of the OUSD(R&E) is to advance military technology and innovation by spearheading a national science and technology strategy and overseeing all research and development across the Department of Defense. The office is structured into three main subcomponents that focus on science & technology, critical technologies, and mission capabilities. Furthermore, OUSD(R&E) provides oversight and direction for key defense agencies, including DARPA, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the Space Development Agency (SDA).
